Licensed Title Agent Info

What is a licensed title agent?

A licensed title agent is someone who has passed the state exam and has been appointed by an underwriter as an approved agent.

What does being licensed allow me to do?

At the most basic level, being licensed allows you to be appointed by a title insurance underwriter in order to issue and countersign commitments or title policies on their behalf, but that’s not the only reason for choosing to do so.   Being licensed by the State of Florida sets you apart among your peers as someone with a professional designation and assures your customers that you have attained a certain quantifiable level of knowledge within your chosen profession.

I am an attorney – do I need to be licensed?

If you are admitted to the Florida Bar, you can countersign title commitments and policies without having to obtain a title license.

How do I get licensed?

To qualify to take the licensed title agent exam you must have at least one year of “responsible title duties” as defined by the Florida Department of Financial Services and this experience must be verified by your employer.  A form for this purpose is provided on the Department website.

If you have less than one year’s experience and still wish to qualify to take the state exam, FDFS requires you to take and pass a 40 Hour Licensing Course.  Although there are several companies offering this service, the one most commonly used is The Koogler Group.

How do I stay licensed?

In order to keep your license, you need to accrue Continuing Education (CE) credits.  Currently, the requirement is for 10 CE hours in a two year period, 3 of which must be on the topic of ethics.

CE credits can be earned by attending seminars given by an underwriter, the FLTA or an online class.

How do I check my hours?

You can check to see how many CE credits you have here.  This page also provides a link to upcoming classes in your area as well as available online classes.
